Scott has been a Professor in the Jazz Department at Guildhall School of Music & Drama since 1983 and was made a Fellow of Guildhall School in 1988. US-born but long based in London, he is a composer, conductor, singer, trombonist and educator, and Director of the London Jazz Orchestra, Eclectic Voices and Artistic Director of Highbury Opera Theatre (HOT). As a trombonist, singer and conductor he has performed with numerous jazz and world music artists including Youssou N’Dour, Goran Bregovich, Ramamani, Phil Collins, Billy Cobham, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Wheeler, Dave Liebman, Norma Winstone, Bobby Wellins and Rufus Reid. He conducts baroque to contemporary music with orchestras, choirs and opera in the UK and Europe and directed the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s innovative cross-genre Renga and Hit Squad ensembles.

With the Guildhall Jazz Orchestra he directed the first European performances of all of the Gil Evans – Miles Davis collaborations, created and directed new versions of Coltrane’s Africa/Brass, Ellington’s Second Sacred Concert and Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers’ Moanin’, George Russell’s New York, and the first live performance, since Miles Davis recorded it with the Danish Radio Orchestra in 1989, of Palle Mikkelborg’s Aura.

A prolific composer, he has written numerous works for jazz ensemble, choir, orchestra and the stage and recently premiered his second opera, The Weekend, based on the book by Michael Palin. He received a BASCA gold badge award for services to music from the Ivors Academy in 2018.

Julian Siegel is an in-demand saxophonist on the UK and European Jazz scene who has worked with many of the top figures in the music. He was awarded the 2007 BBC Jazz Award for Best Instrumentalist. He is currently touring with the Julian Siegel Quartet featuring pianist Liam Noble, bassist Oli Hayhurst and drummer Gene Calderazzo. The Quartet’s first CD Urban Theme Park was awarded the 2011 London Jazz Award and in February 2018 the Quartet released the album VISTA on Whirlwind Recordings, followed up by performances at Jazz Festivals in the UK, Europe and North America.

Julian has toured and recorded with the Julian Siegel Trio with Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, US vocalist Diane Schuur’s European Quartet, UK piano legend John Taylor in trio with Italian vocalist Diana Torto, NDR BigBand, the band Partisans co-led guitarist Phil Robson and with the Julian Siegel Jazz Orchestra playing the commission Tales from the Jacquard.

Julian has toured and recorded with many large ensembles including bands led by Kenny Wheeler, Andrew Hill, Hermeto Pascoal, Mike Gibbs, Steve Gray, Django Bates’ Delightful Precipice, Jazz Jamaica, Stan Sulzmann, Sir John Dankworth, Colin Towns, Allan Ganley, Gareth Lockrane, Hans Koller, BBC Big Band, Jason Yarde’s Acoutastic Bombastic, Nikki Iles and Hal Willner’s Amarcord with Carla Bley and Steve Swallow.

In small band settings Julian has played with Django Bates’ Human Chain, Gary Husband’s Drive, Mulatu Astatke, Laurie Anderson, Steve Nieve, Kirk Lightsey, Norma Winstone, Nigel Kennedy, Robert Mitchell, Byron Wallen, Jason Palmer, Jeff Ballard and with Oren Marshall's Charming Transport Band featuring musicians from Ghana and Nigeria.

Julian has played with vocalists including Dame Cleo Laine, Beverley Knight, Liane Carroll, Cleveland Watkiss, Lauren Kinsella, Joe Lee Wilson, Stuart Staples/Tindersticks (the Julian Siegel Quartet was featured on Stuart Staples film soundtrack for Claire Denis’ Un beau soleil intérieur), Amy Winehouse, Jacqueline Dankworth, Juliet Roberts, Keziah Jones, Terri Walker, Christine Tobin and punk rock legend Steve Ignorant (formerly of Crass).

In January 2021 during lockdown Julian was honoured to have been invited to play on one track on the new album by Sir John McLaughlin. The album Liberation Time was released in June 2021 (Abstract Logix). Recorded remotely in Monaco, Paris, London and Cairo the track ‘Right Here, Right Now, Right On’ features John McLaughlin with Nicolas Viccaro (drums), Jerome Regard (bass), Julian Siegel (tenor saxophone) and Oz Ezzeldin (piano).
