

Guildhall Jazz Festival in association with EFG London Jazz Festival
The creativity and originality of the Guildhall Jazz community is celebrated in the highly anticipated return of our Jazz Festival in November, presented in partnership with EFG London Jazz Festival.

Five afternoons and evenings of performances at Milton Court Concert Hall will feature headline sets from Alexandra Ridout, Fabian Almazan (Alcanza Suite Re-Imagined), Linda May Han Oh, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) with Sam Eastmond and Harry Trevillion’s Cityscape. 
Alongside these highlights, the festival showcases a vibrant line-up of Guildhall Jazz students, alumni and special guests – including Jacqui Dankworth – with performances from the Junior Guildhall Big Band, Guildhall Jazz Orchestra (Kaleidoscope of Rainbows @ 50), and Kinetika Bloco throughout the week.

Fabian Almazan in Conversation with Jo Lawry

Fabian Almazan is an award-winning jazz pianist and composer, environmentalist, and founder of Biophilia Records. His 2019 album, This Land Abounds With Life, is an exploration of the relationship between humans and the natural world. His record label, Biophilia, supports musicians who share Fabian’s love of nature, including pianist Glora Cheng, vocalists Gian Slater and Kim Anderson, and drummer Justin Brown. The record label has even organized volunteer efforts to help clean up rivers and other natural resources.
In this talk, Fabian speaks about what inspired him to start Biophilia and what sustains his interests in music and environmental justice.

Pianist and composer Sara has worked and collaborated with various artists from different musical genres. She composed the music for a contemporary version of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night set in modern day India, which was a mixture of Jazz, Indian Classical Music and Hindi pop songs featuring the wonderful Kuljit Bhamra on tabla. Her current project, the Sara Dhillon Quintet, brings together a talented group of musicians she met whilst studying at Guildhall School and has been a creative catalyst in helping her bring to life her most recent compositions.

The Lester Ridout Trio is an exciting group of exceptional young jazz musicians playing music in the style of the classic tenor-sax led, chordless bands such as the Sonny Rollins Trio, the Johnathan Blake Quartet and Carl Allen (with Christian McBride and Chris Potter).

The trio, led by superb drummer Lester Ridout, features top-notch tenor saxophonist Tom Ridout and the highly in-demand outstanding double bassist, Lorenzo Morabito.

Lester has brought together this fabulous new generation of jazz musicians to explore his love of the chordless line-up and the rich musical opportunities it offers.

Lester Ridout is a busy young London-based drummer who recently graduated from Guildhall School. An already in-demand musician, he has been cutting his teeth at many London jazz venues, including The Vortex, Jazz Café Posk, The Green Note, The Shed, Alfie’s and Oliver's Jazz Bar. Lester is the resident House Band drummer for the popular Monday night jam sessions at ‘sYp’ in the City.

The Alexandra Ridout Quartet has been formed thoughtfully with musicians who are each young prominent voices on the buzzing New York contemporary jazz scene. They beautifully capture Alexandra’s views of life and music as seen through the lens of her compelling compositions. The music aims to bring together Alexandra’s diverse musical background and influences with counterpoint and artistic interplay at the forefront.

At only 26 years old, multi-award-winning Alexandra Ridout is already one of the most talented trumpet players on the international scene. Since winning the BBC Young Jazz Musician in 2016 she was catapulted into a busy high-profile career and has been captivating audiences ever since.
​
Her awards include the British Jazz Awards “Rising Star” 2018, Keep an Eye International Jazz Awards “Best Soloist” 2023, and most recently the Next Jazz Legacy 2025 Award through New Music USA.
​
Alexandra’s distinctive trumpet voice is sought out by numerous prominent musicians such as Yazz Ahmed, Zoe Rahman, Artemis, Orlando Le Flemming, Kit Downes, Jochen Rueckert and Pablo Held.

Oskar Jones is a London-based saxophonist, pianist and composer whose sound seeps deep below superficiality, expressed through contemplative yet lyrical melodies influenced by modal music from an array of musical and cultural sources. In particular, by the intentionality of artists such as John Coltrane and Tigran Hamasyan, and their ability to expertly and musically balance complexity with simplicity, as well as Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah’s forward-thinking approach to, and concept of, the future of jazz. Having studied jazz saxophone and classical piano from a young age, and continually exploring electronic composition, Oskar unifies these practices within his compositions and improvisation, which explore the emotions that arise from the change experienced in the phenomenon of travelling from one place to another, whether physically or mentally, via the conduit of music.

He is currently a 2025 London Transport Museum Young Artist and was the receiver of the 2024 Help Musicians Postgraduate Award, and upon graduating from The University of Edinburgh with a 1st Class Hons in Music in 2023, he received the Bucher-Fraser Scholarship for continued study (The University of Edinburgh), and the 2023 Andrew Grant Bequest Prize for Portfolio of Compositions (The Edinburgh College of Art, Reid School of Music).

Beyond the Blue are an exciting, up-and-coming London-based jazz band. They have played a number of sell-out shows in venues ranging from The Vortex Jazz Club to Hootananny Brixton. They have also opened for established artists such as Omar, Moses Yoofee Trio, Blue Lab Beats, Ebi Soda and Rosie Frater-Taylor, and have played at renowned festivals like Love Supreme and Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Their music, written and arranged by pianist/composer Jude Lane, draws influence from a wide range of genres ranging from jazz to modern classical music and UK dance music, with a unique instrumentation of cello, guitar, alto sax, tenor sax and rhythm section.

After 4 years in the making, Beyond the Blue are releasing their debut album Mentalism in January 2026. Each song explores a different ‘mental state’ ranging from chaos, to peace, to melancholy and to happiness. Compositionally, ‘Mentalism’ fuses an eclectic range of Lane’s influences like Charles Mingus, Ravel, Radiohead and UK dance music genres like jungle and breakbeat hardcore, with the band’s signature line up. The first single from the record is due to be released in September 2025.

Happy Garden is a nature-inspired, 6-piece nu-jazz band blending lush harmonies, organic grooves and improvisational freedom. Drawing influence from the natural world, their sound fuses elements of Nu jazz, Afro Rhythms, and beautiful soundscapes to create immersive sonic landscapes. With rich instrumentation and a spirit of exploration, Happy Garden invites listeners into a meditative, groove-driven experience that’s both grounding and uplifting.

Cuban-American pianist/composer Fabian Almazan joins the Guildhall Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Guildhall School Head of Jazz, Dr Jo Lawry, for a performance of Almazan’s Alcanza Suite re-orchestrated and re-imagined for a contemporary jazz orchestra.
Almazan found his musical roots as a child in Havana where he first became involved in the classical piano tradition. Most recently, Almazan can be heard in such films as Harriet, Chi-Raq, Red Tails and Miracle at St Anna.
During the completion of his jazz piano bachelor's degree at the Manhattan School of Music, Almazan immersed himself in the realm of orchestral composition, studying instrumentation and orchestration with Mr Giampaolo Bracali.
Almazan is the founder and director of Biophilia Records. Biophilia means “an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.” In addition to creating meaningful and imaginative music, Biophilia Records artists are united by a common interest in having a positive impact on the environment and our communities. Biophilia artists collaborate with organisations that specialise in conservation, sustainability and outreach initiatives, regularly volunteering hands-on in community events.

They are currently studying jazz at Guildhall School, performing a combination of luscious, sensitively interpreted standards and soaring, melodic original material. Influences range from Oscar Peterson to Blossom Dearie, from Cecile McLorin Salvant to Kurt Elling, all imaginatively drawn into a soulful, lyrical sound. Come and listen, and they will draw you into their world.

The Olesa Quintet is a London-based contemporary jazz group led by Russian musician Olesa – a jazz vocalist, pianist and double bassist. The band explores modal and contemporary jazz through original compositions and inventive arrangements, with a strong focus on rhythmic complexity. Their sound is exploratory, modern, and pushes the edges of the jazz tradition.

Pianist and Dankworth prize-winning composer Lior Solomons-Wise brings his quartet to the Guildhall Jazz festival for an afternoon of captivating original music. Born and raised in London, many of Lior’s compositions take inspiration from the wilder parts of the UK, in particular the mountainous regions, weaving simple and beautiful melodies through enchanting harmonic explorations. A recent graduate from Guildhall School of Music & Drama, performing highlights include EFG Jazz festival appearances, Ronnie Scott’s, the 606 club, Pizza Express Soho and the Vortex Jazz Club.

Join Jacqui Dankworth and her world-class trio for a night of spectacular music celebrating the release of Jacqui's stunning new album, Windmills. The concert will feature classic songs by Stephen Sondheim, Leonard Bernstein, Michel Legrand, Sérgio Mendes and many others, specially arranged for Ms Dankworth by US pianist (and Jacqui's husband) Charlie Wood.
Jacqui Dankworth is one of the most highly regarded vocalists in the UK. Known primarily as a jazz singer, Jacqui’s unique musical palette also draws on folk, soul, classical, blues, and other influences. Her concert appearances and numerous recordings showcase her virtuosic, seemingly effortless mastery of a variety of genres.

Recent recording projects include Rocking Horse Road, an album project with The Brodsky String Quartet (2022, Chandos Records) and filming/recording at Abbey Road Studios with artist Sonia Boyce for the original performance art piece Feeling Her Way, which won the Golden Lion at the 2022 Venice Biennale and toured the UK and Canada.
Television appearances include the BBC TV’s Jazz 625: One Night Only with Gregory Porter, Joshua Redman and others, as well as live performances and interviews on BBC Breakfast, The Paul O’Grady Show, and The One Show.
Jacqui made her Edinburgh Fringe debut in 2023 with her one-woman show Siren Songs. Other notable concert appearances include New Year’s Eve with the Liverpool Philharmonic, a special performance of her Songs Of Stage and Screen programme with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, a headline concert at Cadogan Hall in London with members the RPO and the BBC Big Band, and as guest vocalist on Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night. Jacqui appeared as Eleanor in The Opera Company’s production of Alban Berg’s Lulu (entitled American Lulu) with the London Sinfonietta, with tour dates including the Edinburgh Festival, the Bregenzer Festspiele in Austria and the Young Vic in London.
Jacqui is also an accomplished actor, having performed leading parts with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and in London’s West End. Highlights include the role of Cinderella in Steven Sondheim’s London premier of Into The Woods, Sophisticated Ladies (a celebration of the music of Duke Ellington) and Les Liaisons Dangereuses with the RSC.
Jacqui appeared as Rosa in the second series of The Borgias starring Jeremy Irons (Showtime TV) and made a cameo appearance in the film Les Miserables directed by Tom Hooper. In autumn 2021 Jacqui appeared in a new musical adaptation of Indecent Proposal at Southwark Playhouse, London.
Jacqui is constantly touring with her own band and has performed and recorded with a diverse array of celebrated musicians, including the Carducci String Quartet, Courtney Pine, Marvin Hamlisch, Paloma Faith, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Gretchen Parlato, Clare Teale, Georgie Fame, David Gordon, Charlie Wood, Gregory Porter, The London Symphony Orchestra and legendary jazz pianist Chick Corea.
Jacqui was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2019 Birthday Honours for services to music.

Headed by guitarist Joe Garland, this talented group of young musicians from London perform boisterous, groovy jazz funk and fusion in the vein of the Yellowjackets, John Scofield and Tribal Tech. Now a 9-piece mega band with a weapons-grade 4-piece horn section, the group are ready to let off some serious steam having all finished their degrees in summer 2024. Armed with at least an album’s worth of new original music (wink, wink), Joe and his colleagues are ready to do some serious shredding and will probably melt your face clean off!!

Guildhall Jazz Festival, in association with EFG London Jazz Festival, welcomes Linda May Han Oh for a performance alongside Guildhall Improvisers Ensemble featuring a wide range of May Han Oh’s compositions for a malleable small jazz outfit.

Based in New York City, GRAMMY award-winning Linda May Han Oh is a bassist/composer who has performed and recorded with artists such as Pat Metheny, Kenny Barron, Joe Lovano, Dave Douglas, Terri Lyne Carrington, Steve Wilson, Geri Allen and Vijay Iyer.
Born in Malaysia and raised in Boorloo (Perth), Western Australia, she has received many awards including a 2022 Deutscher Jazz Preis and was voted the 2018-2021, 2023-2025 Bassist of the Year by the Jazz Journalist’s Association, as well 2022 Bassist of the Year in Jazztimes. Linda also was voted 2019 Bassist of the Year in Hothouse Magazine and was the 2020 recipient APRA award for Best New Jazz Work. In 2023 she received the prestigious Herb Albert Award for music and received an Honorary Doctorate from the Manhattan School of Music in 2024.
Linda has had five releases as a leader which have received critical acclaim, her latest – a quintet album entitled The Glass Hours on Biophilia Records. Her latest commissions include Littoral Tales a solo piano piece in two movements for Gloria Cheng, and Ephemeral Echoes written for percussion trio and piano trio as well as Mirrors and Shadows written for piano and bass duo.
Linda is currently Associate Professor at the Berklee College of Music. Linda was featured on bass in the 2020 Pixar movie Soul under the musical direction of Jon Batiste (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) alongside drummer Roy Haynes and was the model for the character in the film – bassist Miho.

John Zorn’s epic Masada project has redefined the concept of Radical Jewish music for almost three decades. Composer and bandleader Sam Eastmond has the singular honour of being the only British artist selected by Zorn to give this body of work new life.

For a second time – after its debut at Café OTO in 2021 – NYJO and Eastmond join forces to bring the masterful music of Zorn’s Masada to stage, reworked for a 17-piece orchestra of talented young musicians. Expect tight punchy horn lines, a relentlessly driving rhythm section, soaring solos, and Eastmond's signature punk energy.

Led by jazz drummer/composer Finn Genockey, The London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra features some of the most exciting up-and-coming jazz musicians currently studying at or recent graduates of London conservatoires Guildhall School, Royal Academy of Music and Trinity Laban. This ensemble plays a wide selection of repertoire from students’ own compositions as well as music by notable large ensemble composers & arrangers: Bob Brookmeyer, Nikki Iles, Jim McNeely, Maria Schneider and Christine Jensen to name a few. LIJO strives to push the boundaries past the average jazz orchestra concert, playing new and rarely heard compositions with new and exciting lineups. Cityscape Ensemble is a London-based collective led by flautist and composer Harry Trevillion. Formed in the aftermath of the pandemic, the group emerged from informal jam sessions in Hilly Fields, and has since cultivated a distinct sound that blends a wide range of influences, from the ethereal tones of Sigur Rós to the spiritual depth of Pharaoh Sanders. Their music strikes a balance between emotional resonance and intellectual depth, creating an experience that speaks to listeners on multiple levels.

Trevillion's compositions have earned praise from key figures in the music world, including Tina Edwards, Giles Peterson and Jo Goode. The ensemble's work has been featured across notable platforms such as Jazz FM, BBC London, Soho Radio and Sister Midnight FM. In a short time, Cityscape has reached significant milestones, including headlining at the Love Supreme Festival, performing at top London jazz venues like Pizza Express Dean Street, and launching a sold-out EP in collaboration with the esteemed Jazz ReFreshed.

The ensemble features talented musicians from some of the UK and international jazz fusion scene's most exciting acts, including Steam Down, Greg Sperio's Spirit Fingers UK Crew, Bel Cobain and Madison McFerrin. Drawing from their experiences with these influential groups, Cityscape has developed a signature sound that combines tight, exploratory jazz with elements of folk and alternative post-rock.

For this special concert, Cityscape is joined by two additional forces: turntablist and DJ INTERLEKT, known for his innovative use of sampling in live performances, and a live string octet. Together, they will elevate the music to new heights, blending orchestral textures with the ensemble's unique fusion, and creating a sound that promises to be both immersive and memorable.
