High in the mountains, Carmen and her fellow smugglers organize their next operation. Frasquita and Mercédès excitedly embrace the thrill of the outlaw life, while Dancaïro and Remendado coordinate logistics. Carmen, however, has something else on her mind.

Leonora has disguised herself as a young man named Fidelio to gain employment in a prison, determined to rescue her husband Florestan, who is secretly imprisoned for political reasons. Marzelline, the jailer Rocco’s daughter, has fallen in love with Fidelio, much to the frustration of her former suitor Jaquino. As Rocco begins to trust Fidelio, Leonora gets closer to her goal, while the web of personal and romantic tensions continues to grow.

Elisetta and Carolina argue over propriety and respect, with Elisetta insisting on her status as the elder sister and demanding deference. Their exchange of exaggerated politeness – mock bows and formal phrases – quickly turns into thinly veiled irritation. Fidalma attempts to intervene but only adds to the confusion.

Pamina, believing she has been abandoned and overwhelmed by despair, is on the verge of taking her own life. At the last moment, the Three Spirits intervene and gently dissuade her from doing so. They offer her comfort and encouragement, urging her to remain patient while Tamino undergoes his trials.

Despina encourages Fiordiligi and Dorabella to enjoy life more and not treat love as something too serious. Fiordiligi, however, begins to struggle with her loyalty as her resolve weakens under the attention of a disguised suitor. Dorabella is also tempted, and the sisters share their confusion as their feelings start to change. Together, they begin to reconsider their affections and debate which of the two suitors they might choose.

Mařenka is determined to marry for love rather than submit to an arranged marriage. Vašek, the shy and awkward young man intended to be her fiancé, reveals his insecurities, showing both his anxiety about marriage and how easily he is influenced. When Mařenka encounters him and realises who he is, she takes advantage of his fears and self-doubt, subtly persuading him that he would be better off abandoning the match.

Figaro and Susanna are preparing for their wedding on a campsite, setting up for a festival-style celebration, when Susanna reveals that the Count has arranged their pitch to make it easier for him to pursue her. Once Figaro grasps her meaning, he becomes determined to outwit the Count.

The elderly and miserly Don Pasquale decides to marry in order to disinherit his nephew Ernesto, who refuses to give up his love for Norina. Dr Malatesta cleverly devises a plan with Norina to trick Pasquale into a sham marriage. At a secret woodland meeting, Dr Malatesta introduces his supposed ‘sister’ Sofronia – actually Norina in disguise – to the unsuspecting Don Pasquale, presenting her as the perfect model of modesty and obedience.

Marie, an orphan raised affectionately by a French regiment, shares a close, almost familial bond with Sergeant Sulpice. At their encampment, Sulpice reflects on having raised Marie as a daughter, while she expresses loyalty to the regiment that has shaped her identity. Beneath the warmth of their relationship lies Marie’s growing awareness of her own independence.
