Conductor's note
I am often asked how we choose the operas here at Guildhall, especially when we are performing the only opera composed by a woman that the Metropolitan Opera performed in the entire twentieth century, and the UK premiere of a well-known composer’s setting of a well-known story.
The answer is that we search for pieces that present the best developmental opportunity we can find for the exact cohort of second year singers we have. In this year’s case, we have some larger soprano voices than one often sees at student level. We wanted to give these singers a chance to sing some ‘big’ repertoire but intentionally chose to find one-act pieces for this opportunity, so that they could tackle the substance of this material without being overwhelmed by the stamina that a full-length role in their voice type would require.
Consequently, the chance for our singers to sing and our orchestra to play what seems to be Dame Ethel Smyth’s homage to Wagner seemed irresistible. Likewise, Respighi’s fabulously compact telling of a story we know better from Britten’s opera The Rape of Lucretia presents our players and singers with a genuine verismo opera experience that they have responded to with relish!
The happy by-product of this intention to choose our repertoire to fit our specific cohorts of singers, is that in the last twelve years, we have commissioned three new operas and two new orchestrations, presented one world stage premiere along with several UK and London premieres, and have been delighted to see a selection of operas we have ‘revived’ subsequently programmed elsewhere after colleagues had seen our productions.
We hope very much that you enjoy these operas this evening and perhaps have the chance to see them presented elsewhere again in the near future!

Der Wald
A rural community deep in the forest.
Röschen is to be married tomorrow. During the humble preparations, overseen by her father, a travelling salesman arrives to peddle his wares. The merriment is interrupted by a strange sound from the forest – the call of Iolanthe, a treacherous figure and partner of Rudolf, who owns the land on which they all live and work. Everyone scatters in fear apart from Röschen who prays while waiting for her fiancée, Heinrich, a Woodsman. When he arrives lugging a deer that he has just killed for the wedding feast Röschen insists he hide it as poaching on Rudolf’s land is punishable by death. Once concealed, the couple dream of their new future together in the forest which has cradled them since birth. Röschen returns home shortly before Iolanthe arrives.
Struck by his prowess as a Woodsman, Iolanthe propositions Heinrich who explains he is faithful to Röschen. Iolanthe threatens Heinrich and orders him to leave Röschen. After Heinrich has left, Rudolf arrives questioning why Iolanthe is avoiding him, but Iolanthe says their relationship is over. Spotting a Woodsman’s axe on the table, Rudolf suspects Heinrich of being Iolanthe’s new lover. Suddenly, a group of Iolanthe’s friends drag in the Hausirer, a Pedlar. As they interrogate him, the men stumble across the dead deer. Fearing for his life, the Pedlar tells Rudolf that he saw Heinrich with the deer. Rudolf brags to Iolanthe that Heinrich must be punished for his crime.
Iolanthe threatens Heinrich again, saying that to avoid punishment for his crime he must leave Röschen and join her. Röschen pleads with Heinrich to save himself, but he refuses, telling her their love will defy death. Iolanthe orders the execution of Heinrich; Röschen is left distraught.
Interval (30 minutes)
Lucrezia
Ancient Rome.
Evening. Sextus Tarquinio, Prince of Rome, and four noblemen are leading a siege against Ardea, outside Rome. Bored and drunk, they argue about the moral character of their wives. One of the men, Tarquinio’s cousin Collatino, proposes that they bet on whose wife is the most virtuous. They return to Rome to find their wives are out feasting, apart from Lucrezia, the wife of Collatino, who is at home with her handmaidens. Collatino has won the bet. But a seed of desire ferments in Tarquinio.
The next evening. Late. Lucrezia is reading a story to her handmaidens, Servia and Venilia, while they spin wool. Lucrezia emphasises the moral of the story – that while it’s possible to live without love, one cannot live without honour. Tarquinio arrives unexpectedly on the pretext of needing accommodation for the night. Lucrezia obliges but is unsettled by this unusual visit. After Lucrezia has gone to sleep, dreaming of her husband, Tarquinio enters her bedchamber and rapes her.
The next day. Early morning. Lucrezia is disturbed by the light exposing her violated body. She demands Servia and Venillia remain silent. Lucrezia summons Collatino and her father, Spurio Lucrezio, instructing them to bring witnesses, Bruto and Valerio. Lucrezia reveals what happened to her and insists they vow to avenge the crime before revealing the name of the perpetrator. Despite Collatino’s reassurance, Lucrezia sees her relationship as tainted and ends her life to retain her honour. After her death, Bruto leads the charge to kill Tarquinio and overthrow the corrupt Tarquinii royal family.
Throughout, a female character, La Voce, observes and comments on the action, at times channelling the thoughts of the protagonists.

Dedication
This performance is dedicated to Clare Lawrence. Clare was introduced to the world of music and performance by Dudley Cole – a close friend of her father, whose greatest delight was opera, and who held a deep love for London’s cultural life. Inspired by his passion and his wish for his estate to benefit charity, Clare chose to follow suit.
Her gift has created The Cole Bequest, supporting scholarships and opera productions at Guildhall School – a lasting tribute to Dudley’s influence and enduring love of the arts.
Clare had long considered leaving a gift in her Will, but it was her very first visit to Guildhall that confirmed it was the right choice. The students’ creativity, professionalism and enthusiasm convinced her that her legacy could make a real and lasting difference.
We celebrate the generosity of all who inform us of their intention to support Guildhall School in their Will by inviting them to join the 1880 Society. Please visit gsmd.ac.uk/legacies or contact Meg Ryan at meg.ryan@gsmd.ac.uk / 020 3834 1561 to discuss leaving a gift in your Will or to arrange a visit to see how you could make a difference to our students.
