Welcome
It is our pleasure to welcome you to this, our eleventh incarnation of Opera Makers.
The MA in Opera Making & Writing is a one-year programme, delivered in association with the Royal Opera House, in which three composer-librettist pairings create 25-minute chamber operas specifically for singers in the first year of the Opera Course. This creates a challenging training experience for singers, repetiteurs, orchestral musicians and theatre technicians, for whom being involved in such a process is often an entirely new experience. It also aims to give composers and writers first-hand experience of the whole process of making an opera, from the page to the stage.
The pieces have been extensively workshopped at each stage of development, to give the singers in particular a voice in helping the composers create roles that suit them vocally and we are hugely appreciative of all the wisdom and support which so many of the Opera Course staff and our vocal professors have given in helping us along the way. It is this process of creating a work together as a company that is just as important to us as the result, and we do hope you enjoy these new chamber operas.
Professor Julian Philips Programme Leader, MA in Opera Making and Writing
Professor Stephen Plaice Writer-in-Residence
Nazli Tabatabai-Khatambakhsh Professor of Dramatic Writing
Dominic Wheeler Head of Opera Studies
Please note these operas may contain adult content, strobe lighting and haze.
The performance will last approximately 1 hours and 55 minutes, including two 10-minute intervals. Please note, due to the technical nature of this performance, both intervals are closed to the public. Please make your way out of the auditorium.

Beneath the velvet curtain of a fairy-tale puppet theatre, the strings begin to fray.
Strings of Rebellion follows a Princess, a Witch and a Prince: puppets bound to a tyrannical Puppet Master, forced to perform the same script night after night. Trapped in roles they never chose, each begins to unravel the story that ensnares them. The Witch, cast as the eternal villain, risks everything to spark a rebellion. The Princess, imprisoned and voiceless, rises as a leader to reclaim her own agency. The Prince, manipulated into a false sense of heroism, is forced to confront the truth of his complicity. As the story fractures, they defy their master in a fight for autonomy, authenticity and truth. Musically and emotionally, the opera shifts from fairy-tale artifice to raw realism as each character breaks free to sing with their own authentic voice. At its core, Strings of Rebellion is a haunting exploration of control and selfhood – asking who we are when the script is torn away, and what we are willing to risk to write our own.

Alexander and the Tree is a reimagination of the legend taken from the Shahnameh (شاهنامه), the Iranian national epic by Ferdowsi (فردوسى). The story follows Alexander the Great as he journeys in search of immortality, accompanied by his wife Roxana and his mentor Aristotle. They encounter a mystical Talking Tree, a timeless being which holds all answers and challenges Alexander’s need for conquest and control. As the boundaries between wisdom and power blur, Alexander must decide whether true greatness lies in eternal life or knowing when to let go.

In 1933, strange happenings are rumoured to be taking place at a remote farmhouse on the Isle of Man – home to a small family who, the locals say, tend to keep to themselves. A BBC journalist and a paranormal investigator have travelled from the mainland to investigate. Miss Lambert is intent on leaving promptly with a good story for the press while Mr Price hopes to pin his name to the greatest paranormal discovery of the century. When the unlikely pair arrive at the farmhouse, they are greeted by James and Margaret Irving, and their watchful daughter Voirrey. As night falls and tensions rise, it becomes clear that within the creaking walls of Doarlish Cashen, all is not as it seems…
This opera is inspired by real events.
