Trouble in Tahiti
In a prosperous American suburb in the 1950s, Sam and Dinah appear to have everything a young couple could wish for: a comfortable home, a handsome husband, a devoted wife and a little boy. Yet beneath the polished surface, their marriage is in trouble.
Sam heads off to work where he boasts of his success at the office and dreams of escape through sport and male camaraderie. Dinah visits a psychiatrist, hoping to understand the unhappiness that shadows her days.
At lunchtime the couple meet by chance on the street. Each invents an excuse to avoid spending time together, and they part with a mixture of relief and regret.
Dinah takes refuge in the cinema, where she is swept up by an escapist South Sea romance called Trouble in Tahiti, and its seductive theme, Island Magic.
When Sam and Dinah return home in the evening they attempt to talk but end up arguing again. Sam wearily suggests going to a movie: “something about Tahiti”. Dinah, who has already seen it, winces, then agrees, and they depart.

Amelia al ballo
In her boudoir, Amelia prepares for the first ball of the season while her maid’s fuss over her clothes. Her husband bursts in with a letter proving she has a lover and demands the man’s name. Amelia agrees to tell him if he promises they will still attend the ball. She reveals that her lover lives in the apartment directly upstairs, and her husband rushes off with a pistol to confront him.
Worried that a confrontation might spoil her evening, Amelia warns her lover from the balcony, and he slides down a rope to join her. He begs her to elope at once. She refuses and when her husband returns, the hidden lover is betrayed by the rope. The pistol fails to go off, and the two men launch into an impassioned debate about love and marriage while Amelia watches the clock.
Exasperated, she ends the argument by breaking a vase over her husband’s head. The police arrive, and Amelia claims a burglar attacked her husband. The lover is arrested, the husband is taken to hospital, and Amelia departs for the ball on the arm of the gallant Chief of Police.

Stories from the 1880 Society: A lasting love of opera
For over 15 years, Antoni George Korris (1945–2025) enjoyed attending opera performances at Guildhall School with his wife Janet. His love of opera, from 19th century to baroque, was something very special to him, and he chose to continue that passion beyond his lifetime by remembering Guildhall in his Will.
Through Antoni’s generosity, his love of opera will live on: helping our staff to nurture the next generation of musicians and artists and ensuring that future audiences can continue to share his experience of being inspired by their extraordinary talent.
A legacy gift is a deeply personal way to express what matters to us and to help shape the future we want to see. Antoni’s generosity is a wonderful reminder of the difference our opera community can make. When we leave something we love to the future, our passion can live on long after we are gone.
Antoni’s love of opera is now part of Guildhall’s story and will live on in the artists and audiences still to come.
We celebrate those who inform us of their intention to support Guildhall School in their Will by inviting them to join the 1880 Society – named for the year the School was founded. If you want to join the society, contact Meg Ryan at meg.ryan@gsmd.ac.uk / 020 3834 1561 or to arrange a visit to see how you could make a difference.
